What if you could sense gold. When you're near it, your body tingles and your head aches and you just can't seem to breathe. In this stunning novel by Rae Carson, readers are transported to the mid 1800's where a young women from Georgia is blessed with the gift of sensing gold. The murder of her family prompts her to flee west, to California, along with the thousands as the gold rush consumes the nation.

This first book in the series details Leah's departure from her home and the first part of her journey west.

While there is a bit of fantasy in Walk the Earth a Stranger, it is quite subtle and well integrated into the story, it reads more like historical fiction.

In the style of a classic western, the good guys have hearts of gold and the bad guys are villainous to the core. The characters are well developed and there are so many plot twists it made my head spin.

I devoured this book in hours and cannot wait to read the next book, Like a River Glorious.

A quick entertaining book, it gives the reader a look into philosophy through wonderfully witty, laugh out loud jokes. Covering a wide range of topics such as metaphysics, logic, ethics, religion, existentialism, and many more, the authors introduce each philosophical concept in bite size bits, followed by a joke or two. The connections are not all readily available, instead letting the reader make their own inferences. It combines humor and profound philosophical issues in a manner that doesn't trivialize the philosophy or dilute the jokes.

Included in the book are humorous cartoons from several artists, a glossary of philosophical terms and a timeline of great moments in the history of philosophy.

And when you get to the end, you'll finally understand what happens when Plato and a Platypus walk into a bar.

What's better than to laugh out loud and learn at the same time.

This is the kind of book that will keep you up late into the night, turning page after page till you get to the very end.

A suspenseful read, each chapter alternates from two different points of view. The first follows, Quinn, a rebellious young women, who discovers her kind and very normal roommate has gone missing. The second zeros in on Alex, a brooding teenager, who, while working in a small diner, becomes quite intrigued with a mysterious stranger who shows up in his little town on a chilly afternoon.

Quinn becoming increasingly desperate with each day that Ester is missing, sets out to find the truth. While on the hunt, shocking secrets are revealed, leading Quinn to believe that her roommate is not the saint everyone believes her to be.

The pace builds quickly, with plot twists around every corner.  You will think you've figured it out, only to have everything you thought you knew questioned.

You'll fly right through it, and close the book, shaking your head, "what the heck just happened."

Kubica so skillfully takes her characters and her readers to the edge … closing your eyes, yet always wanting more.
